Traditional market bazaar in Saudi Arabia

Traditional Souks and Bazaars

Saudi Arabia's traditional markets (souks) are a sensory delight. Souq Al Zal in Riyadh is one of the oldest, selling antiques, carpets, and traditional items. Souq Al Alawi in Jeddah offers spices, perfumes, and handmade textiles in the historic Al-Balad district.

The gold souks in Riyadh and Jeddah offer high-quality jewelry at competitive prices. Bargaining is expected - start at about 40% of the asking price and negotiate from there. Visit souks in late afternoon or evening when they're most lively.

Modern Shopping Malls

Saudi Arabia boasts some of the Middle East's largest shopping malls. Kingdom Centre Mall in Riyadh features luxury brands beneath the iconic sky bridge. Red Sea Mall in Jeddah is one of the world's largest malls with over 450 stores.

The Avenues in Riyadh and Mall of Dhahran in the Eastern Province offer world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment. Most malls are open from 10 AM to midnight (later on weekends).

What to Buy and Pricing Tips

Top souvenirs include Arabian perfumes (oud and bakhoor), premium dates (Ajwa and Sukkari), Arabic coffee sets, handwoven carpets, and traditional clothing. Saudi gold is sold by weight and is often cheaper than Western prices.

Tax-free shopping was introduced with 15% VAT on most goods. Some malls offer tourist tax refund programs. Keep receipts for purchases over SAR 250 to claim refunds at the airport. Credit cards are accepted everywhere, but carry cash for souks.
